Mayor Kitty Piercy & WAND Leaders Forge the Way for Peace

Good news! Yesterday the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) passed a resolution that calls for an end to the wars and redirects military spending to domestic needs. Southeast Michigan WAND leader Fern Katz and Oregon WAND leader Susan Cundiff were both instrumental in getting their respective mayors to sign onto the resolution! The next step is for the conference to present the resolution to Congress.

We’re also proud of Mayor Kitty Piercy’s (Eugene, OR) role in this initiative. As an active supporter of Oregon WAND and the Women Legislator’s Lobby (WiLL), Mayor Piercy presented the resolution to the conference of mayors gathered in Baltimore for their annual meeting on June 17-20. It’s great to see such a strong woman leading the way for peace!

According to All Headline News, “The last time that the mayors forayed into foreign policy was in the 1970s when the conference passed a resolution that called for an end to the Vietnam War.” The passage of this resolution comes at an opportune time when Congress is poised to make decisions in the coming weeks about troop withdrawal in Afghanistan.
