Bravo, Edie! As some politicians campaign they seemingly can say anything they want and those who "take them at their word" do so at their own peril. There are those who gave Reagan the credit for bringing down the Soviet Union. But, as we all know, there were many reasons it fell. One of the main reasons is that the military and nuclear arms race with the U.S. cost the Soviet Union billions of rubles, which left little resources for building up a truly strong nation. As Elizabeth Warren stated in the video of her that has gone viral, "I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did." Let’s not fall for the feckless words of some politicians, but learn from history and seek the truth. That’s where true strength and security resides.

Another "feckless" approach to military spending: continuing to sink $$ into nuclear submarines and other overspending on our Cold War-Sized nuclear arsenal of more than 5,000 nuclear weapons. This is completely ineffective in keeping us safer and in fact undermines efforts to deal with serious 21st century threats like nuclear terrorism.
Maybe we need a list of WTF (What the Feck) defense spending?

Sara - Your words paint a compelling portrait of our nation facing a crossroads. Do we continue to mis-spend on misplaced "defense" efforts, while the education of our next generation, the existence of a robust middle class, and a chance at the American dream, all drift further and further away from the grasp of America's children and young people? We must send a compelling message to Congress, and to state leaders as well! In Georgia, more than $4 billion state dollars have been cut from local schools across our state. Pre-K teachers had their salaries cut 10%, along w a reduction in the length of their school year. What madness! It's time to :Take Back The American Dream!"

Kathy Robinson has nailed it! It is incredible that we live in a time when teachers are being furloughed, classrooms are being overpacked with too many children, school buildings cry out for refurbishment, and technology for our classrooms falls further and further behind. Yet at the same time, Pentagon budgets grow inexorably, year after year, and any mention of cuts cause cries of consternation from Panetta and others who have a stake in a burgeoning Pentagon budget! Where oh where are our misplaced priorities going to lead this nation - down a road to decline and second class status if we don't reverse this disastrous approach to our federal budget decisions!

I think that the picture you've created here, Sara, speaks to so many families in our generation. My son is artistic, the way I was. At his age, I was looking forward to art school. His dad and I are thinking differently about how to spend limited dollars on an uncertain future. Thank you for posting this piece.

I couldn't agree with you more. Your insight is right on! Listening to the news last night companies are beginning to bring back work to Americans instead of over seas. That is one step in the right direction! Hopefull that move is a reflection of a trend for American workers!
